Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General
ChoMUN XXVII’s flagship Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General has been specially designed to give experienced delegates a unique and exciting experience. The committee topic will remain a secret until shortly before the conference, at which point the background guide will be released and delegates will have the opportunity to engage in committee-specific preparation. Due to the nature of the committee, delegates will be forced to think on their feet, and their crisis skills will be constantly tested. As the flagship committee of ChoMUN XXVII, the Ad Hoc promises the most innovative crisis experience on the college competitive circuit and one that will challenge your predispositions of traditional crisis Model UN.
When preparing for this committee, the executives encourage delegates to focus on tangible skills, including but not limited to note and directive writing, speeches, directive mergers, and on-your-feet thinking. While several hints for this committee will be released over the months leading to the start of ChoMUN XXVII, the executives would caution against relying too heavily upon them; they are not meant to be easily interpreted, as that would ruin the secret!
This is an advanced committee. We highly recommend that delegates have experience competing on crisis committees on the collegiate circuit before competing on the ChoMUN Ad Hoc.
shweta nanda
Executive
Shweta is a fourth-year majoring in Sociology and Public Policy. She grew up in Delhi, Taipei, and Shanghai but now hails from a small town in PA called West Chester where she lives next to a horse ranch and dairy farm. Prior to this year, Shweta was a chair for the midsize GA (with her lovely co-exec Marcos) at ChoMUN XXVI, a chair for the Large GA at ChoMUN XXV, and served as an Assistant Chair for a crisis committee at ChoMUN XXIV. Shweta will also be an exec for UChicago’s high school conference, MUNUC, and she is a President of UChicago’s travel team. In the little free time Shweta has outside the MUNiverse, she works as a campus tour guide (with her other lovely co-exec Ariel), does research in the urban innovation lab, loves eating Danish pastries, and enjoys reading Pitchfork album reviews (How did The Strokes’ Room on Fire only get an 8?).
For the low cost of zero dollars, reach out to Shweta at shwetananda@uchicago.edu if you have any questions, concerns, or need any music recommendations.
marcos lopez
Executive
Marcos is a fourth-year majoring in Biological Chemistry and pursuing a Joint BS/MS in Chemistry. He makes sure to specify he is from the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook because the Chicago opps never hesitate to scream at him when they find out he isn’t connected to the city via the CTA. At last year’s ChoMUN, Marcos co-chaired the midsize GA with the best co-exec ever, Shweta. He also served as a CD for ‘C’mon Mayotte, Why Not?’: Independence of Comoros, 1973 at ChoMUN XXV and was an AC for ‘Railcars and Magyars’: Hungary, 1848 at ChoMUN XXIV. Outside of ChoMUN, Marcos remains involved in the MUN community as the delegate’s choice favorite staffer at MUNUC, UChicago’s high school conference, by serving as a Chair. He also competes with the Team. When Marcos isn’t busy with MUN, he conducts research in a lab on-campus focusing on cancer vaccine research. In his limited free time, Marcos enjoys reading comic books, scouring YouTube and SoundCloud for unreleased music, and reminiscing about the Daft Punk concert he never went to. And also wasting way too much time curating the worst Spotify playlists that he subjects his roommates, including Ariel, to listening to during Friday night pre-games.
If you have any questions or want to talk about why the Alive 2007 tour is the greatest gift to music of all time, please reach out to marcoslopezii@uchicago.edu.
ariel barnea
Executive
Ariel is a fourth-year student pursuing a Joint BS/MS in Astrophysics and Computer Science. He hails from Bergen County, New Jersey – or in NYC-coordinates, about 20 minutes from the George Washington Bridge. Prior to being an Exec for the Ad Hoc, Ariel was the Crisis Director for the UN Security Council at ChoMUN XXVI, a Crisis Director for Magna Carta 1215 at ChoMUN XXV, and an Assistant Chair for the Ad Hoc at ChoMUN XXIV. Outside of ChoMUN, Ariel serves as the Secretary-General of MUNUC, UChicago’s premier Model UN Conference for high school students. He also actively participates in UChicago’s MUN travel team (with the amazing Shweta and Marcos). Outside of MUN, Ariel conducts Computational Cosmology research at Argonne National Laboratory. On campus, he serves on the UChicago Mentoring Program Advisory Board for the College Programming and Orientation Office, works as a Student Visit Coordinator with the Office of College Admissions, and is on the Student Government Finance Committee. In his minimal free time, he enjoys biking, making homemade espresso drinks, going to improv shows with friends, and “blogging” about new restaurants around Chicago!
