Group of 77, 2024

Conceived as a collective of developing countries for the purpose of supporting their collective interests and negotiating capacity within the UN, the Group of 77 stands as the developing world’s counterpart to the Group of 77. It seeks to advocate for the New International Economic Order (NIEO), a series of proposals adopted by the UN general assembly where developing countries are freed from economic colonialism through the formation of an interdependent economy that values “trade not aid”. Considering the ongoing state of economic colonialism globally, this committee’s goal will be to revitalize the NIEO for the current day through the creation of a unified platform that would allow developing countries to take a more active stance against economic colonialism and formulate their own unified response to neoliberal quo upheld by developing nations. Given the differences in dependence on developed nations and attitudes towards them held by these developing nations, finding common ground between making radical changes to current institutions and maintaining them will be essential, as collaboration and integration of all developing nations will be required to achieve the group’s goals and make significant progress towards ending economic colonialism.

This is a single-delegate committee. There are no position papers due for this committee.

kaan alp Açık

Chair

Kaan Alp (or simply just Kaan) is a second year majoring in Business Economics. He was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey and moved to Chicago last year to embark on his college education in the University of Chicago. He has participated in 3 MUN conferences in Turkey as a delegate during his high school days. He is a proud member of University of Chicago’s travel TEAM and has served as an assistant chair in the committee “The Fall of The Cholas” in ChoMUN XXVI. He will remain in the travel TEAM and be serving as an experienced assistant chair (EAC) in the committee ICJ in 1948 in MUNUC and co-chair in the G77 committee in CHOMUN XXVII next year. In his free time, Kaan loves to eat food, drive cars (which he unfortunately cannot in the US), hang out with friends, watch comedy shows, run track, go to the gym to work out and play basketball, table tennis or football (the globally recognized one).

For absolutely no cost, reach out to Kaan at kaacik@uchicago.edu if you have any questions, concerns, or need any sports, music or TV show recommendations.

alex fan

Chair

Alex is a third-year double majoring in Law, Letters and Society and Computer Science with a Machine Learning specialization. He grew up in Memphis, TN but now calls Shanghai, China and Tampa Bay, FL his home (long story). For CHOMUN XXVI, Alex chaired the I Like You A Latte: Cafe Riche and the Egyptian Revolution and competes as a "GA Baddie" on the UChicago MUN Team. Outside of MUN, Alex is a V5/5.11- climber who is currently learning how to lead climb. He also works at the campus Media Arts, Data, and Design Center, which acts as a campus maker/prototyping space and fuels Alex's chronic addiction to 3D printing random things. He also loves skating, all things gaming, most things anime, and all things music(minus country). Alex is also currently learning how to make clothes, do a kickflip, and not be a silly goose 24/7 (and would greatly appreciate any tips).

Feel free to reach out to Alex through email at AFan2025@uchicago.edu. He is (usually) very responsive and will be happy to answer any questions, comments, or concerns.

jd allen

Chair

JD Allen is a third-year Public Policy Studies student interested in international policy from Venice, Florida. He has competed with UChicago’s Model UN Team since his first year, served as a crisis director for ChoMUN’s UNSC last year, and hosts a radio show in WHPK. Outside of ChoMUN and school, JD spends a great deal of time playing video games, tinkering with old consoles, and looking around for new music online. He is extremely excited to see how this committee will unfold and hopes to see delegates engage in lively debate over the weekend.

Reach out to him if you have any questions at all at jdallen@uchicago.edu and he hopes to see you soon!
