Confessions of a Shopaholic: Macy's & Co., 1922

Jazz-filled nights. Skyscrapers towering above. The birth of modern consumerism. Step into the glamorous world of 1920s New York City and find yourself on a spree in one of America's most iconic department stores. But it's not all Broadway and bootlegging: delegates will be confronted with the question of workers' rights, the unclear future of fashion, and cutthroat competition from the other emerging department stores of the time. Delegates will assume the roles of influential figures from the era including union leaders, executives, and social activists. This committee will tackle a range of topics, from the labor strikes that shook the very foundations of the department store industry upon which Macy's rests to the infamous Straw Hat Riot and the artistic revolution of window displays. With Fifth Avenue as their battleground, delegates will be tasked with preserving the reputation of Macy's & Co., fighting for labor rights, and outmaneuvering rival stores seeking to claim the crown of the retail world. To emerge victorious, delegates must employ their strategic thinking, negotiation skills, and persuasive diplomacy. Will they prioritize profit at the expense of the working class, or will they champion progressive reform and equitable labor practices? Immerse yourself in a world of glitz, glamor, and cutthroat competition and leave your legacy on one of America's most iconic institutions.

anusha gupta

Chair

Anusha is a fourth-year at the University majoring in Biology with a specialization in Genetics, and a minor in Health & Society. She grew up in Columbia, Missouri, but currently lives in Tampa, Florida. This is her first time chairing a CHOMUN committee, but she looks forward to the experience! She is very involved in on campus RSOs and serves as the Global Health Alliance President and is a member of the Executive Board of Camp Kesem at UChicago. When she isn’t dying from her life as a premed, you can find her trying new restaurants in West Loop or River North with her friends, rewatching Derry Girls for the 10th time, discussing players on the ATP tennis tour or jamming to some Taylor Swift at the gym!

If you have any questions or need Chicago food recs you can email her at anushag@uchicago.edu!

memphis cutchlow

Crisis Director

Memphis is a fourth year in the College majoring in Media Arts & Design and minoring in Data Science (much to the dismay of her GPA). She tells everyone she's from Columbia, Missouri because that's where she went to high school, but before that she lived in Memphis, Tennessee which is objectively much funnier. Last year, Memphis was an Assistant Committee Chair for the Run It Back, Turbo committee on the creation of NASCAR at ChoMUN XXVI and an Assistant Committee Chair for the Kingdom of Medina committee at ChoMUN XXIV. But before her college career even began, she competed at UChicago's high school conference MUNUC and was awarded the prestigious superlative "Best Renegade" at MUNUC 32. Outside of MUN, she is an inventory manager at an on-campus coffee shop which means she tries really hard to remember to order oat milk so people aren't forced to order (God forbid!) sesame milk lattes. She also plays intramural soccer, finger paints, and listens to copious amounts of Ethel Cain.

If you are also a Daughter of Cain (or have any other questions, comments, compliments, or concerns) you can reach her at mcutchlow@uchicago.edu.

lola bingham

CRISIS DIRECTOR

Lola is a third-year majoring in Creative Writing and minoring in something not yet determined. She is from Chicago to everyone who isn’t from Illinois and from Lagrange, IL to everyone who is. Last year, she served as an Assistant Chair on the crisis committee Run It Back Turbo: The Formation of NASCAR at ChoMUN XXVI and is thrilled to be back for ChoMUN XXVII. In her free time, Lola loves reading, baking, and playing any sport that requires a racket or a paddle. She is so excited to be a Crisis Director and would love to talk about any questions or concerns you may have. She’s also available for book recommendations as well as rating interpretive dance moves if you send her a video of the moves. You can reach her at ljbingham@uchicago.edu.
