The Other British Isles: Falklands War, 1982

The year is 1982, and after centuries as a global empire, Britannia no longer rules the waves. The UK has suffered a recession, and its international influence has steadily waned since the end of the Second World War. The government of the United Kingdom, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is deeply unpopular. However, the government will face its first major foreign policy crisis over the Falkland Islands, a small archipelago off the coast of Argentina. The islanders are governed by the United Kingdom and overwhelmingly see themselves as British citizens, but when an Argentine military junta makes plans to invade the Falklands, the government will have to craft a response. Tensions are escalating, with diplomatic negotiations failing to yield a satisfactory resolution. As rumors of Argentine military mobilization circulate, the situation grows increasingly precarious. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's cabinet must prepare for the possibility of an Argentine invasion. The decisions made will determine the fate of the Falkland Islands and shape the UK's global standing.

Delegates in this committee will navigate the complexities of international law, military strategy, and diplomatic negotiations. They will face challenges including political upheaval, diplomatic intrigue, military operations, international espionage, and economic turmoil. The decisions taken here will resolve the Falklands dispute, address the British economy, and with good luck, prove the Thatcher Ministry’s mettle in time for the next parliamentary elections.

Tyler rosenzweig

CRISIS DIRECTOR

Tyler is a fourth-year student studying business economics and computer science from Vancouver, Canada. Being Canadian, he is thrilled to welcome you with open arms to his final ChoMUN committee!

This year, Tyler is super excited to be serving as a co-crisis director for this iteration of ChoMUN. Two years ago, he served as the co-crisis director for the “Cold War Takes Off” and also previously served as an assistant chair for “I Miss Idris, the Forgotten King: Libya, 1951”. In his spare time, Tyler can be found sifting through the depths of Wikipedia, playing basketball, desperately trying, and failing, to get Jack to throw out his gallon of milk, and hoping that Aaron Rodgers can survive more than 4 snaps this coming year.

If you have any questions about the committee or want to banter about sports, you can contact Tyler at trosenzweig@uchicago.edu.
