How The Sausage Gets Made: Armour and Company Board of Directors, 1906

“They use everything about the hog except the squeal.” ― Upton Sinclair, The Jungle

In the heart of Chicago’s meatpacking district, Armour and Company would emerge as one of the greatest industrial empires in American history. Under the leadership of its founder, Philip D. Armour, the company leveraged technology, monopolistic business tactics, and the meatpacking “disassembly line” to reach unprecedented heights. But the rise of Armour and Company would come at the cost of public health, worker safety, and numerous legal scandals. President Theodore Roosevelt’s trust busting agenda, muckraker Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, and a growing workers safety movement are just some of the threats now facing Armour and Company’s bottom line. Will Armour and Company make the cut and adapt to the 20th century? Or, like processed meat, will the company’s board members find themselves canned in the end?

Alexander gordon

Chair

Alex is a third-year student majoring in Math and Economics. Originally from Glencoe, IL, just a bit north of Chicago, he has been involved in MUN for three years, having previously served as a moderator and EAC for ChoMUN XXVI, MUNUC 34, and MUNUC 35. Outside of MUN, Alex is a member of the Fed Challenge Team and chess team, although that usually involves getting roasted by 7 year olds or playing poker. When he does have free time, he enjoys exploring the various neighborhoods of Chicago and playing guitar, though most of his time is spent working on problem sets.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to Alex at agordon73@uchicago.edu.
