Do You Hear the People Sing? : The June Rebellion, 1832

It’s Paris, 1832, and the French people are doing what they do best: rioting. A series of food shortages, increased cost of living, and a cholera outbreak have driven the population to the brink of rebellion. In the midst of it all, a dedicated group of privileged students and their lower-class allies have made plans to overthrow the monarchy of King Louis-Phillippe. Delegates will step into the shoes of an underclass facing conflicting priorities as society collapses around them. Will the delegates become the Masters of the House, or return to a room of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables? That is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes.

Viren maira

Chair

Viren is a third-year in the College studying Biology and is on the pre-med track. He is from the northern suburbs of Chicago, although he spent much of his childhood in New York and thus naturally believes thin crust pizza is superior to deep dish.

Prior to chairing The June Rebellion, he chaired The Kasparov Gambit: The International Chess Federation, 1993 at ChoMUN XXVII and served as an assistant chair on The Saffron Resurrection: The Maratha Confederacy, 1761 at ChoMUN XXVI.

Outside of ChoMUN, he participates in MUNUC, UChicago’s high school MUN conference, where he serves as the USG of GA. He also researches in an immunology lab on campus and volunteers for UChicago Medicine. In his free time, you can find him exploring Chicago with friends, playing poker, and going to the gym.

If you have any questions about the committee or would like to just say hi, you can reach Viren at virenmaira@uchicago.edu.

William Foster

Crisis Director

William is a third-year in the College studying Political Science and Economics. He hails from the small town of Durham, Connecticut, where his next-door neighbors are twenty-three Jersey cows.

He served as an Assistant Chair at ChoMUN XXVI on the committee It’s a Whole New World: Board of Disney Directors, 2012, and was a Crisis Director for The Kasparov Gambit: The International Chess Federation, 1993 at ChoMUN XXVII. Any of his previous delegates can tell you that William loves a good musical-inspired break, having performed them four times in his past two ChoMUNs.

He is also a member of UChicago’s competitive Model UN team and competes on UChicago’s 28-time national champion quiz bowl team. As the second-biggest Les Misérables fan in his family, he couldn’t be more excited to be working on this committee.

If you have any questions about the June Rebellion (or any other period in history), you can reach William at williamf@uchicago.edu.

Elliott Husseman

CRISIS DIRECTOR

Elliott is a second-year in the College studying Classics. He’s from sunny San Diego and cries a single tear whenever the temperature dips below the seventy-degree standard of his beloved home.

He previously served as an assistant chair on How The Sausage Gets Made: Armour and Company, 1912 for ChoMUN XXVII, and as a crisis director for Carousels, Coasters and Cutthroats: Coney Island, 1906 for MUNUC XXXVII. He also competes with UChicago’s traveling team (Kant! Kant! Kant!).

When not modeling the United Nations, he’s likely in rehearsal for a University Theater production, perusing long-forgotten corners of Wikipedia, or engrossed in a good game of Civilization. If you have any good big band jazz recommendations, he will be thoroughly grateful.

For any questions, comments, or concerns (or jazz recommendations) you can reach Elliott at ehusseman@uchicago.edu.
