WHO: Medical Rights and Their Limits

Our globalized world is fertile ground for novel pathogens, social discord, and media pandemonium. This year, the WHO will be tasked with addressing issues in medical privacy, the legitimacy of conscientious objections to healthcare policies, and the proper extent of any legislated right to care. With lives at stake and personal freedoms in the balance, delegates will consider questions including the following: how is a state to verify a claim to a religious exemption from mandatory vaccination? When, if ever, should privacy rights should be circumvented to serve a broader public health purpose? Does a state owe its citizens a right to health care, and in what form? This committee’s remit is broad, and we hope discussion and solutions rise to meet this momentous occasion.

This will be a double-delegation committee. Position papers are not required.

jay Love

Chair

Jay is a second-year majoring in “who knows.” Born and raised in Houston, Texas, he is a dedicated y’all evangelist and refuses to MUN without cowboy boots. Previously, Jay served as an Assistant Chair for ChoMUN XXVII’s Cleveland Emergency City Council and is an active member of UChicago’s travel team.

In the brief periods of time where MUN doesn’t occupy a comprehensive segment of his brain, Jay competes with UChicago Undergraduate Moot Court, peruses the New York Times, and shakes his fist at the latest drivel originating from the Supreme Court. He is also an unapologetic fan of the two-time, undisputed World Series Champion Houston Astros. Jay is incredibly excited to serve as Chair of the WHO this year, and can’t wait for ChoMUN XXVIII.

If you have any questions unrelated to trashcan-related rules violations, Jay’s email is jrlove@uchicago.edu.

lulu deluca

Chair

Lulu is a second-year at the College who gets very stressed when faced with decisions and thus doesn’t have a major yet. As a proud Canadian, she is ready to regale you with all of the reasons why she thinks Canada is fabulous and can often be found downplaying the severity of Chicago winters to her American friends.

Last year, Lulu served as an Assistant Chair for “There’s No Surf in Cleveland: Cleveland Emergency City Council, 1978” alongside her co-exec Jay. Lulu is also a member of UChicago’s MUN travel team and is chairing a committee for MUNUC, UChicago’s high school MUN conference.

In her free time, Lulu loves exploring new Chicago neighborhoods, sampling the various smoothies and cappuccinos available in Hyde Park, keeping up with Canadian politics (I love the CBC), and spelling words like colour with the additional ‘u’.

If you’d like to hear my take on why Wordle is the worst of the New York Times mini-games, chat about Canadian politics, or ask any questions about the committee my email is ldeluca@uchicago.edu!

simar Narula

Chair

Simar is a second-year majoring in computational biology and data science (for now). She’s from Northern Virginia — not to be confused with D.C. — and has been doing Model UN for way longer than she’d like to admit.

Along with Jay and Lulu, she competes with UChicago’s travel team, will be chairing a committee at MUNUC, and served as an Assistant Chair at ChoMUN last year for the Ad-hoc Crisis Committee. Outside of MUN, Simar can be found binge-watching her favorite Marvel movies, trying out new restaurants and coffee shops downtown, or getting into heated debates about her favorite music artists.

If you want to hear her opinions on how Spotify is so much better than Apple Music, have restaurant recommendations, or just want to chat feel free to send her an email at simar@uchicago.edu!
